For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. Water Baptism
- Baptism is an outward expression of the inward reality of change (salvation).
- Jesus commanded Baptism for all His followers (Mt 28:18-20)
- Jesus Himself left an example for believers to follow. He was not a sinner, yet He showed obedience to the Father.
- Baptism is an action of obedience Christ’s command. (Acts 2:37-41; 8:5-13; 8:35-39; 9:10-18; 10:34-48; 16:13-15; 16:30-33; 18:8; and 19:1-6).
- Baptism by immersion is taught in the Bible.
- The Greek Word “Baptizo” means to immerse, to dip repeatedly or to put under water. It means to place something into something else to produce a permanent change.
- The location John the Baptist chose (there was much water) for Baptism suggests John practiced immersion Baptism (Jn 3:23)
- The Ethiopian Eunuch went to the water and came out of the water (Acts 8:38-39). This may imply immersion.
- Romans 6:4 (Buried with Him by baptism) also suggests baptism by immersion. This suggests our union and our identification with Christ.
- The New Testament baptism examples prove that baptism should not be delayed. Baptism was immediately followed by salvation.
- Baptism is not for the forgiveness of sins. Baptism is followed by the forgiveness of sins.
- The story of the thief on the cross does not prove that we don’t need baptism. The thief on the cross is not an example for delaying baptism.
- Baptism is a symbol
- Baptism symbolizes our identification with Christ in His death, burial and resurrection (Romans 6:4) (Col 2:12)
- People should confess their sins and turn away from them before they are baptized (Mk 1:5). To repent means to turn away from one’s sins.
Holy Spirit Baptism
Holy Spirit Baptism verses
Acts 1:2 . . . After [Jesus] through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, 3 to whom He also presented Himself alive . . ., being seen by them during forty days . . . . 4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem , but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
Acts 2:16 “This is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams. 18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy.
Acts 10:44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. 45 And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.
Acts 11:15 “The Holy Spirit fell upon them, as upon us at the beginning. 16 “Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, ‘John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' 17 “If therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?”
Acts 19:2 [Paul] said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John's baptism.” 4 Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.” 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” 6 When Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.”
